BACKGROUND: The optimal treatment strategy for radioiodine (RAI) treatment protocols for benign hyperthyroidism remains elusive. Although individualised activities are recommended in European Law, many centres continue to provide fixed activities. Our institution implemented a dosimetry protocol in 2016 following years of fixed dosing which facilitates the calculation of individualised activities based on thyroid volume and radioiodine uptake. METHODS: This was a retrospective study comparing success rates using a dosimetry protocol targeting an absorbed dose of 150 Gy for Graves' disease (GD) and 125 Gy for Toxic Multinodular Goiter (TMNG) with fixed dosing (200MBq for GD and 400MBq for TMNG) among 204 patients with hyperthyroidism. Success was defined as a non-hyperthyroid state at 1 year for both disease states. Results were analysed for disease specific or patient specific modulators of response. RESULTS: This study included 204 patients; 74% (n = 151) received fixed activities and 26% (n = 53) of activities administered were calculated using dosimetry. A dosimetry-based protocol was successful in 80.5% of patients with GD and 100% of patients with TMNG. Differences in success rates and median activity administered between the fixed (204Mbq) and dosimetry (246MBq) cohort were not statistically significant (p = .64) however 44% of patients with GD and 70% of patients with TMNG received lower activities following treatment with dosimetry as opposed to fixed activities. Use of dosimetry resulted in successful treatment and reduced RAI exposure for 36% of patients with GD, 70% of patients with TMNG, and 44% of patients overall. CONCLUSION: This retrospective clinical study demonstrated that treatment with a dosimetry-based protocol for TMNG and GD achieved comparable success rates to fixed protocols while reducing RAI exposure for over a third of patients with GD and most patients with TMNG. This study also highlighted that RAI can successfully treat hyperthyroidism for some patients with activities lower than commonplace in clinical practise. No patient or disease specific modulators of treatment response were established in this study; however, the data supports a future prospective trial which further scrutinises the individual patient factors governing treatment response to RAI.

To establish an easy way to perform volumetry of the thyroid gland using ultrasonography, we evaluated the accuracy of the products of the depth and width of the right thyroid lobe as indices of thyroid volume. The depth and width of both thyroid lobes were measured using ultrasonography before surgery in 193 patients with Graves' disease. The products were compared with the weight of the thyroid obtained from operative records. We also evaluated the depth and width of the right thyroid lobe in 312 subjects who presented without any thyroid disease. The products of depth and width of the right and left lobes of patients with Graves' disease correlated similarly well with the weight of the thyroid obtained from operative records (ρ = 0.896 for right, ρ = 0.886 for left, p < 0.0001). Because the right lobes were larger than the left lobes, the products of the depth and width of the right lobe were adopted as novel parameters for an easy volumetric approach. The relationship between the weight and the measurements of the right lobe was described using the following regression equation: weight (g) = [11.8 × depth (cm) × width (cm)] - 16.0. The products of the subjects without any thyroid diseases were distributed between 0.6 cm2 and 4.4 cm2, with a median of 2.0 cm2. The upper limit of these values in these subjects was estimated to be 3.8 cm2. This easy ultrasonographic volumetric technique makes it possible to perform a semi-quantitative assessment of thyroid volume and to differentiate diffuse goiter from normal-sized thyroids.

Iodine is a micronutrient required for the production of thyroid hormones, which regulate metabolism, growth, and neurodevelopment. Iodine deficiency among adolescents and young adults is a major global health issue. We analyzed data from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 database to calculate the prevalence, incidence, and disability-adjusted life-year (DALY) rates of iodine deficiency among adolescents and young adults. We explored the specific year with the most substantial changes in the trends of iodine deficiency among adolescents with annual percentage change (APC) by Joinpoint Regression analysis. Descriptive analyses were conducted to characterize the iodine deficiency burden according to age, sex, location, and sociodemographic index (SDI) quintiles. All measures are listed with 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs), and all rates are reported per 100,000 individuals. From 1990 to 2019, the iodine deficiency prevalence rate among adolescents decreased from 3082.43 (95% uncertainty interval [UI], 2473.01-3855.86) to 2190.84 (95% [UI], 1729.18-2776.16) per 100,000 population, with an AAPC of -1.15 (95% confidence interval [CI], -1.29 to -1.02). Regarding the SDI in 2019, the highest prevalence and DALY rates of iodine deficiency were reported in low-SDI countries. In 1990, Southeast Asia had the highest prevalence and DALYs rates for iodine deficiency among adolescents, while in 2019, Africa had the highest prevalence rate (3330.12). CONCLUSION: Globally, the iodine deficiency burden among adolescents has substantially decreased since 1990; however, low-SDI countries still bear a great burden. Implementation measures and monitoring systems should be strengthened to reduce the iodine deficiency burden, especially among adolescents. WHAT IS KNOWN: • Iodine deficiency can cause severe or irreversible developmental disorders, particularly in adolescents and young adults. • Universal Salt Iodization was implemented for ensuring appropriate iodine intake. WHAT IS NEW: • We found substantial declines in the prevalence rates of iodine deficiency among adolescents during the past three decades. Globally, the disability-adjusted life-year rate of iodine deficiency among adolescents decreased from 56.17 in 1990 to 35.38 in 2019. • Iodine deficiency among adolescents in low- sociodemographic index countries still bear a great burden.

Brassica vegetables are widely consumed all over the world, especially in North America, Asia, and Europe. They are a rich source of sulfur compounds, such as glucosinolates (GLSs) and isothiocyanates (ITCs), which provide health benefits but are also suspected of having a goitrogenic effect. Adhering to PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a systematic review to assess the impact of dietary interventions on thyroid function, in terms of the potential risk for people with thyroid dysfunctions. We analyzed the results of 123 articles of in vitro, animal, and human studies, describing the impact of brassica plants and extracts on thyroid mass and histology, blood levels of TSH, T3, T4, iodine uptake, and the effect on thyroid cancer cells. We also presented the mechanisms of the goitrogenic potential of GLSs and ITCs, the limitations of the studies included, as well as further research directions. The vast majority of the results cast doubt on previous assumptions claiming that brassica plants have antithyroid effects in humans. Instead, they indicate that including brassica vegetables in the daily diet, particularly when accompanied by adequate iodine intake, poses no adverse effects on thyroid function.

Cribriform-morular thyroid carcinoma is a rare type of thyroid cancer. It has a strong association with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), a hereditary genetic disorder that predisposes individuals to the development of numerous polyps in the colon and rectum. We describe the case of a young female patient who presented with an enlarging goiter, notably without detectable thyroid nodules or masses on ultrasound, who after total thyroidectomy was found to have cribriform-morular thyroid carcinoma. This diagnosis led to genetic testing and diagnosis of FAP syndrome. We demonstrate that this rare thyroid carcinoma may present with nonsuspicious findings on sonographic evaluation while being a valuable harbinger in the diagnosis of FAP syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The preferred standard treatment for retrosternal goiter (RSG), a slow-growing, often benign tumor, remains thyroidectomy. An alternative strategy may be required when the goiter is intrathoracic. Data on the results of RSG procedures are rarely reported. Careful patient selection and assessment are critical to avoiding an unexpected sternotomy during surgery and postoperative complications. This study aims to examine the clinical findings and treatment outcomes of RSG and to identify the variables affecting postoperative complications in a resource-limited setting. METHOD: A retrospective study was conducted at Al-Thawra Modern General Hospital in Sana'a, Yemen, on 69 patients diagnosed with RSG and undergoing thyroidectomy between April 2019 and February 2023. Initial clinical characteristics, radiological and laboratory findings, treatment approach, and outcome were collected from the patient's medical profile and analyzed. To determine the variables influencing postoperative complications, a bivariate analysis was carried out. RESULTS: The mean age was 51.0 ± 13.6 years, and 45 (65.2%) were female. The most commonly reported symptoms were palpable masses (66; 95.7%), difficulty breathing (45; 65.2%), and neck discomfort (20; 29.0%), with 7 (10.1%) patients being asymptomatic. Previous thyroid surgery was reported in 10 (14.5%) cases. According to the grading classification, grade 1 was the most prevalent (42; 60.9%). Total thyroidectomy was the predominant surgical procedure in 59 (85.5%) cases. Using a cervical approach, all patients underwent thyroidectomy, and a sternotomy was required in one case. Histopathological analysis revealed benign multinodular goiter in 79.7%, followed by papillary thyroid cancer in 10.1% and thyroiditis in 6.7%. The postoperative complication occurred in 22 (31.9%), and the most common complication was transient hypocalcemia (11, 15.9%). There was no mortality during or after the surgery. In bivariate analysis, advanced age, difficulty swallowing, tracheal deviation, large RSG mass, advanced RSG grade, previous surgery, and malignant histopathology were associated with postoperative complications and were statistically significant (all p<0.05). CONCLUSION: RSG is a rare disease that may require challenging surgical intervention. In this study, the cervical approach was the most practical and least intrusive surgical method. In addition, postoperative complications were associated with advanced age, difficulty swallowing, tracheal deviation, large RSG mass, advanced RSG grade, previous surgery, and malignant histopathology. Low postoperative complication rates can be achieved by understanding the surgical architecture of the neck, essential clinical RSG presentation, thyroid pathology, and necessary surgical treatment.

Thyroid hormones regulate metabolic rate, nutrient utilization, growth, and development. Swine are susceptible to thyroid suppression in response to disease or environmental conditions, but the physiological impact of such disruption has not been established. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of hypothyroidism induced with the antithyroid medication methimazole (MMI). 10 mg/kg MMI significantly decreased circulating triiodothyronine (T3) for the duration of treatment but had only a transient effect on circulating thyroxine (T4). Thyroid tissue weight was significantly increased by more than 3.5-fold in response to MMI treatment. Histologically, the eosinophilic colloid was largely absent from the thyroid follicle which displayed a disorganized columnar epithelium consistent with goiter. MMI induced hypothyroidism has no effect on growth rate over 28 days. Hepatic expression of genes associated with thyroid metabolism (DIO1, DIO2, and DIO3), lipid utilization (CD36, FASN, and ACACA), apoptosis (TP53, PERP, SIVA1, and SFN) and proliferation (CDK1, CDK2, CDK4, and CDKN1A) were unaffected by treatment. Collectively these results demonstrate that MMI induces mild systemic hypothyroidism and pronounced goiter, indicating a strong homeostatic central regulation within the hypothalamic pituitary thyroid axis. This combined with limited peripheral effects, indicates resilience to hypothyroidism in modern swine.

INTRODUCTION: The definition of thyroid goiter remains ambiguous, yet size may impact both malignancy rate and surgical complications' rate. METHODS: All patients with thyroid goiter who underwent thyroidectomy between 1/2015-1/2023 were included. Goiter was defined as lobe ≥4 cm. For analysis purpose, goiters measuring 4-8 cm and ≥8 cm were defined as large and extremely large goiters, respectively. For malignancy definition, tumor<1 cm in their largest diameter were excluded from study. Collected data included demographics, cytology, histology and postoperative complication. RESULTS: 144 goiters from 111 patients were included. The most common indication for surgery was symptoms (55 %). Compared with large goiter, extremely large goiters demonstrated a trend for tracheal narrowing on pre-operative CT findings (23 % vs. 45 %, p = 0.07 respectively). Overall differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) rate was 17 % (25/144) without statistical difference between groups (p = 0.89). Within goiters with pre-operative benign cytology, the DTC rate was 17 % (7/43). Follicular variant of papillary thyroid cancer was the most common type for both groups. Nodular hyperplasia was significantly associated with extremely large goiters (53 % vs. 73 %, p = 0.03). No significant difference was found in transient hypocalcemia (48 % [15/31] vs. 41 % [5/12], p = 0.6) and other complications' rate between extremely large goiters and the control group. CONCLUSION: When discussing management options for patients with goiters, the size of the goiter should not regarded as a higher risk for complications or malignancy, yet the relatively high malignancy rate found should be taken under consideration for resection.

Neck lumps can be a symptom of thyroid and parathyroid gland metabolic diseases, and papillary thyroid carcinoma is reported in some cases. It is commonly observed in middle-aged people with a female predominance. Papillary carcinoma of the thyroid is the most common type of thyroid cancer, originating from the thyroid gland cells. It is slow-growing and less aggressive, but it has been reported to have the ability to affect nearby lymph nodes and other organs. It is associated with the RET protooncogene, NTRK1, and MET genes. Early detection is crucial, especially for middle-aged patients. Treatment typically involves thyroidectomy and radioactive iodine therapy, with the need for hormone replacement therapy. Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is an efficient and cost-effective tool for diagnosing neck swellings, leading to a conclusive diagnosis of the mass. We present a case of a 60-year-old Indian female with swelling over the neck for the past six years, which was recently accompanied by dyspnea, hand tremors, and palpitations. The ignored neck mass was found to be a hyper-echoic mass with macro calcifications and cystic degeneration on ultrasonography, confirmed as papillary thyroid carcinoma by FNAC, followed by a complete thyroidectomy and uneventful follow-up.

Millets (defined here to also include sorghum) have been consumed in Asian and African countries for centuries, and have in recent years become increasingly popular in Western countries, especially because of their proven health and environmental benefits. Nevertheless, some concerns have been raised that their consumption can interfere with thyroid function and cause goiter. This systematic review aimed to investigate the link between millet consumption and goiter. We found nine papers that were relevant to this topic and included them in this review. Among nine papers eight were on pearl millet and one was on fonio millet. The findings of the review indicate that published literature on the association of pearl millet and increased goiter prevalence are not compelling and strong enough to assert that pearl millet consumed as part of a balanced diet can lead to goiter in the general population. To ensure appropriate factual messaging about millets, we need more scientific research to conclusively state whether millet consumption mediates goitrogenic effects.

A 7-month-old male French bulldog was referred for abnormal mentation and gait. Physical examination revealed a dome shaped calvarium and persistent bregmatic fontanelle. Neurological examination revealed proprioceptive ataxia, pelvic limb paraparesis and strabismus with moderate ventriculomegaly, thinning of the cerebral parenchyma, and widened cerebral sulci on magnetic resonance imaging. Masses were identified in the region of the thyroid, which appeared heterogeneous and hyperintense in T1-weighted and T2-weighted compared with the adjacent muscle signal masses were identified. Radiological diagnosis was hydrocephalus "ex vacuo" and goiter. Blood test revealed abnormally low total thyroxine (TT4), free thyroxine (FT4), and normal thyrotropin concentration. A diagnosis of congenital hypothyroidism was confirmed by positive genetic test for thyroid peroxidase mutation. Thyroxine supplementation treatment rapidly improved clinical signs.

Airway complications account for a significant amount of post-thyroidectomy complications. Forgotten goiter is a residual thyroid mass left after total thyroidectomy, an event already depicted in the literature. Clinical presentation is diverse, ranging from asymptomatic tracheal deviation to symptoms caused by hormonally active thyroid tissue or airway obstruction due to mass effect. However, it has never been documented as the cause of acute respiratory distress following thyroid surgery. We report the case of a 65-year-old female undergoing left hemithyroidectomy due to long-standing substernal goiter. Anesthesia induction and surgery were uneventful. On extubation, the patient presented with acute respiratory distress requiring prompt airway management. A computed tomography scan revealed residual intrathoracic goiter resulting in significant airway compression. Therefore, although a rare event, a forgotten goiter should be considered by a multidisciplinary team when patients undergoing surgery for substernal goiter develop acute postoperative airway obstruction after common post-thyroidectomy complications have been excluded.

Background Acromegaly is a rare disease that is frequently associated with thyroid diseases. The exact prevalence of goiter and thyroid dysfunction remains uncertain. Objectives This study aims to provide a comprehensive description of the clinical, morphological, and biochemical features of thyroid disorder in Saudi patients with acromegaly and to establish its correlation with the activity and duration of the disease. Methods This retrospective study involved patients who were diagnosed with acromegaly during the period 2006-2023 in an outpatient endocrine clinic at a tertiary hospital. Results A total of 40 patients with acromegaly (27 males and 13 females) were identified and included in the analysis, with a mean age of 46.78 ± 13.76 years and an estimated duration of disease of 8.08 ± 6.43 years. Goiter was diagnosed in 28 patients (70.0%), including multinodular goiter (MNG) (70.0%), solitary thyroid nodules (14.2%), and thyroid cysts (14.2%). Primary hypothyroidism was present at 40.0%. Goiter was not correlated with estimated insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) levels or disease duration. In 40 patients with nodular goiter, fine needle biopsies were performed in six cases; five nodules were benign, and one nodule was a follicular lesion of unknown significance (Bethesda III). Conclusions The patients with acromegaly have a high prevalence of nodular thyroid disorders and thyroid dysfunction. No cases of thyroid cancer were found in our study. The periodic ultrasonography assessment of the thyroid is needed for evaluating patients with acromegaly.

Thyroid disorders affect more women than men, but the underlying mechanisms contributing to this disparity remain incompletely understood. Thyrotropin (TSH), the primary regulator of thyroid oxidative hormonogenesis, has been implicated as a risk factor for proliferative thyroid diseases and a predictor of malignancy. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the impact of sustained elevated TSH levels on thyroid redox homeostasis, inflammatory markers, and DNA damage response in both male and female rats. Rats were treated with methimazole for 7 or 21 days, and hormonal measurements were conducted. H2O2 levels were evaluated in thyroid membrane fractions, while enzymatic activities were assessed in total thyroid homogenates. Sex-specific differences emerged, with females displaying higher reactive oxygen species levels - increased transiently NOX and sustained DUOX activities. Lipid peroxidation marker 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE) was elevated in females at both time points, contrasting with males just at 21 days. Sexual dimorphism was observed in DNA damage response, with females showing higher γH2AX levels at 21 days. Elevated IL-1ß, TNF-α, CD11b mRNA, and phospho-NF-κB levels at 7 days indicated a distinct inflammatory profile in females. Notably, both sexes exhibited upregulated antioxidant enzymes. Our data suggest that females are more susceptible to oxidative damage and inflammation in our goiter model, which may be associated with higher ROS production and a less-efficient antioxidant defense system. These findings provide insights into the sex-specific mechanisms underlying thyroid dysfunction and highlight the importance of considering sex disparities in thyroid disorder research.

OBJECTIVE: Nodular goiter may increase the risk of thyroid cancer, but the genetic factors contributing to nodular goiter are not well understood. There is an overexpression of H19 lncRNA in goiter tissue and its target remains unknown. In this study, we attempted to identify a new target for H19 in the context of goiter development. METHODS: Using interaction energy calculations, the interaction between NKX2-1 mRNA and H19 lncRNA was examined. Putative microRNAs were found at the H19 lncRNA target site with the highest affinity for NKX2-1. RNAseq data was analyzed to determine the tissue specificity of gene expression. Samples were taken from 18 goiter and 18 normal tissues during thyroidectomy. The expression of NKX2-1 was determined by RT-qPCR using specific primers. RESULTS: The interaction between NKX2-1 and H19 was characterized by six local base-pairing connections, with a maximum energy of -20.56 kcal/moL. Specifically, the sequence that displayed the highest affinity for binding with H19 overlapped with the binding site of has-miR-1827 to NKX2-1. It was found that NKX2-1 is exclusively co-expressed with H19 in normal thyroid tissue. As compared to adjacent normal tissues, nodular goiter tissues have a significant overexpression of NKX2-1 (relative expression = 1.195, p =  0.038). CONCLUSION: NKX2-1 has been identified as the putative target of H19 lncRNA, which is overexpressed in nodular goiter tissues significantly.

INTRODUCTION: Carotid body tumor (CBT), a neuroendocrine neoplasm, and benign multinodular goiter (BMNG) are distinct pathologies affecting the neck region. Although rare, they can occur concurrently. This case contributes to the limited evidence regarding the association between these distinct pathologies and their operative management. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 45-year-old female with a palpable mass on the right side of her neck. She was diagnosed with Shamblin type III non-secretory CBT alongside BMNG. The surgical intervention included resection of the CBT, carotid artery bypass, and Dunhill thyroidectomy. DISCUSSION: This case is the third reported instance of coexisting CBT and BMNG. Their causative relationship is evident in the literature without a clear explanation of the underlying mechanism. Both conditions are treated surgically. Dunhill thyroidectomy for BMNG is a safer option, offering more flexibility and advantages over other thyroidectomies. CONCLUSION: This case highlights the complexity of managing such dual pathologies and may provide further evidence of their association.

AIM: By means of the scientific description of two uncommon cases who underwent. surgical resection of multinodous goiter and following histopathological investigation revealing isolated extrapulmonary manifestation of sarcoidosis, this uncommon diagnosis including symptomatology, clinical findings, diagnostic and therapeutic management is to be illustrated. CASE DESCRIPTIONS: Diagnostics: Scintigraphy of the thyroid gland with a left-thyroid cold node; ultrasound-guided puncture (cytological investigation, non-suspicious). THERAPY: Elective thyroidectomy with no macroscopic anomalies und no abnormal aspects with regard to surgical tactic and technique. Histopathological investigation: Complete resection specimen of the thyroid gland with granulomatous inflammation consistent with sarcoidosis. CLINICAL COURSE: Uneventful with no further manifestations of sarcoidosis in the following diagnostics. DIAGNOSTICS: Ultrasound, inhomogeneous node (37×30×35 mm) of the right thyroideal gland with echo-poor parts and peripheral vascularization; scintigraphy showing marginally compensated unifocal autonomy of the thyroid gland (laboratory parameters, increased serum level of thyroglobulin [632 ng/mL]). THERAPY: Planned right hemithyroidectomy with confirmed nodous structure of thyroid parenchyma, without suspicious lymph nodes. Histopathological investigation: 33-mm follicular, nodular, encapsulated structure of thyroid parenchyma (diagnosed as follicular adenoma); 2nd opinion: low-grade differentiated carcinoma of thyroid gland with angioinfiltrating growth and granulomatous inflammation of sarcoidosis type. Procedural intent: After tumor-board consultation, completing thyroidectomy was performed within a 5-weeks interval (pT2 pN0[0/1] V1 L0 G3 R0) with subsequent ablating radio'active iodine therapy; 18 F-FDG-PET-CT (several atypical infiltrates within the right upper lobe of the lung) and bronchoscopy with no detection of further manifestation of sarcoidosis. CONCLUSION: Sarcoidosis is considered a rare granulomatous multi-locular, systemic disease of not completely known etiopathogenesis with substantial heterogeneity. In most cases, it is associated with the lung, but which can become manifest in various organs. Frequently, extrapulmonary manifestations are usually detected as histological findings by coincidence, which require further investigation to find out additional manifestations as well as to exclude florid infection or other granulomatous processes (clarifying competently differential diagnosis). Therapy is only indicated in symptomatic organ manifestations, taking into account the high rate of spontaneous healing and possible side effects.

parapharyngeal space can have a mass of thyroid origin following metastasis from the thyroid or ectopic thyroid tissue. The extension of multinodular goiter into the parapharyngeal space is rare. A 54-year-old female presented with a 5-month history of neck mass and dyspnea. On examination, a large mass was seen on the right side of the neck which was bulging into the right parapharngeal. In the sonography, a large 50 × 57 mm cyst seen at the upper end of the right lobe of the thyroid. Computed tomography (CT) identified a 46 × 56 mm lesion medial to the right carotid sheath with a mass effect on the parapharyngeal space from the posterolateral aspect and appeared to be an exophytic cystic nodule arising from the upper pole of the right thyroidal lobe. The patient underwent total thyroidectomy, and the final pathology of multinodular goiter was reported. The spread of masses of the thyroid origin to the parapharyngeal space should be considered one of the differential diagnoses of these space masses.

Vascular variations are prevalent among the human population. However, the occurrence of anatomical variations in the inferior thyroid artery originating directly from the brachiocephalic trunk (BCT) is exceptionally rare, as confirmed by numerous research studies. In addition, reliable departmental statistics reveal that the incidence rate of retrosternal goiter is approximately 19%. In this case study, the variation blood vessels in the neck were accidentally found and analyzed. Simultaneously, we conducted an analysis on the clinical significance of a rare anatomical variation. The study focused on a 60-year-old female patient who underwent a surgery for retrosternal goiter, during which it was discovered that the inferior thyroid artery originated from the BCT. Our report presented a unique case involving this particular combination of anatomical variations within the BCT. The anatomical variation reported in our study will effectively reduce the risk of patients and enhance our comprehension of this anatomy's characteristics, thereby avoiding the occurrence of iatrogenic complications.

BACKGROUND: Extrathyroid implantation or dissemination of thyroid tissue secondary to a thyroid procedure is rare. Most of these belonged to thyroid carcinoma with metastatic potential and uncommon for benign pathologies. METHODS: We report the case of a 31-year-old female who was identified to have multiple subcutaneous implantation of thyroid tissue 5 years after transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach. A comprehensive literature search on implantation of thyroid tissue secondary to thyroid procedures was performed. RESULTS: Accidental tearing of the capsule during previous surgery may lead to the subcutaneous implantation. Through literature review, a total 29 articles with 47 patients were identified. 33.3% were benign lesions, and implantation was mostly secondary to fine needle aspiration biopsy (46.5%). CONCLUSIONS: Subcutaneous or port site implantation after endoscopic thyroid surgery may occur in benign thyroid pathologies and therefore, oncologic principles must be strictly followed during surgery regardless of its histopathological nature.
